Published on the occasion of the exhibition, Andy Warhol: The American Indian: Paintings and Drawings, this catalogue features full plates, installation views, archival images, and an essay by Rainer Michael Mason.

“In fact, beyond Warhol, it is the Indian who is the subject of this exhibition. While it certainly provides information about an outstanding contemporary artist, the exhibition is also part of a struggle. For once Warhol and his works will be considered as objects serving another cause. We purposefully put Russell Means and the problems of the Indians in modern America in the foreground. Books such as “Indian Nations, Sovereign Nations” can provide the reader with precise information about these issues than can the exhibit; so we wish that beyond Andy Warhol’s paintings and drawings, people will become aware of Indian values, their exemplary human qualities, of the need to give those exhausted nations the independence and freedom that is rightfully theirs and that we constantly claim for ourselves” (Rainer Michael Mason in his essay “Andy Warhol, The American Indian: Some Facts and Annotations”).
