Published on the occasion of the exhibition Barbara Kruger: Money Talks, this catalogue features full plate images, an essay by New Museum Director Lisa Phillips titled “The Money Shot” and two essays by the artist, “Decadism” and “Work and Money.”

Kruger uses the subject of money to create some of her most powerful and lasting images. The works address the cultural representation of power, identity and sexuality, challenging the stereotypes and the clichés.

“In my work I try to question the seemingly natural appearance of images through the textual commentary which accompanies them. This work doesn’t suggest contemplation: it initially appears forthright and accessible. Its commentary is both implicit and explicit, engaging questions of definition, power, expectation, and sexual difference” (Barbara Kruger, “Work and Money” 1981).
